Equal Rights for all folks throughout our world.

That’s why I signed the current circulating petition to bring the question of Israeli products being sold in our Wheatsville Food Co-op here in Austin to our fall Owners election ballot.

500 owners must sign the petition to put the ballot on our annual fall election ballot by the end of July. You must be a Wheatsville owner to sign the petition now and vote in the fall.

As a board member and publicist for the 76-year-old Episcopal Peace Fellowship, I champion our group’s stance on Boycott – Divestment – Sanctions – of the illegal Israeli 70-year Occupation of the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem.

Israel imprisons 4.4 million native folks in that sad area – an Occupation that has brought hundreds of UN resolutions of condemnation and the ruling of the International Court of Justice that it is “an illegal act.”

It is cruelly ironic to me that the government of Israel is doing to these folks today what the Russians did to the Jews in the early 1900s followed by the horrific Holocaust the Nazis systematically carried out in the years leading up to and into the Second World War.

Boycotts bring back fresh memories to me of Afrikaner white-ruled Apartheid South Africa being hit by international economic boycotts in the early 1990s. Nelson Mandela called for a boycott of products made in South Africa. The boycott worked back then despite the warnings of Afrikaners – charges I hear today from Israel and many folks in our country – about how a boycott really will hurt the folks we are trying to help.

I am proud of my Wheatsville Co-op. As many of you know I served on the WV board of directors for 15 years mostly as board chair. Before my time of service, Wheatsville was the only grocery store in Texas that did not sell grapes during Cesar Chavez’s fight for Farm Workers Rights. Next time you are in Wheatsville South Lamar experience the Alan Pogue iconic photo of Cesar Chavez in the Wheatsville Guadalupe produce aisle. It’s mounted on the wall in the register checkout area.

I gladly voted for our co-op boycotting Eden products last year. I will vote to boycott products made in Israeli-occupied lands in this fall’s election.

Please understand you can vote to boycott Israeli products while still admiring the people of Israel and our Jewish friends in the US – just not the government of Israel.

Memories of the Israeli military’s killing of 2,000-plus people – including an obscene number of children – in Gaza last summer during the 50-day Hamas & Israeli lopsided war still outrages me. The folks who survived are still living in their bombed-out houses with promised aid yet to arrive. Only about 230 Israelis lost their lives during last summer’s “war” since Israel is protected by the Iron Dome – an umbrella-like American designed device that stops the many low-grade weapons and ammo fired into it by Hamas.
