Wal$Mart & Other Big-Box Stores Chomp into Thanksgiving.

This blog post updated for Black Friday 2015

Wal$Mart out did itself in the Black Friday World when they began its Christmas Holiday Layaway two weeks earlier than last year—this time on Memorial Day weekend.

What’s next – Fourth of July?!?

Please check out my website link that features Rev. Billy & his Stop Shopping Gospel Choir.

Please Buy Only Local on Black Friday

This blog post updated on Black Friday 2014

Well here it is 2014 Thanksgiving (aka Black Friday) that now begins in late September – not mid-November anymore – when I first called out the Big Box stores for Chomping into Thanksgiving on this website five years ago.

Reverend Billy and his Church of Stop Shopping Gospel Choir predicted this years ago. The insightful Reverend Billy first preached against our country’s annual Christmas Shopocalypse – the end of humankind from consumerism, over-consumption and the fires of eternal debt – almost a decade ago.

Watch the trailer to his “What Would Jesus Buy?” documentary film that should be part of your holiday celebration every year.

If you liked the film’s trailer – experience the 90-minute film now.

Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping Gospel Choir have not stopped since then. Video from Occupy and most recently Ferguson and Calls to Action are on their website

Some things have changed – employees now have to work on a national holiday and Black Friday Mania isn’t contained to Big Box stores anymore since even some local business websites have jumped into the Commercial Slime Lagoon.

Below are my original posts

Keep the spirit of Buy Nothing Day throughout the Christmas Shop-Apocalypse in 2011

“What Would Jesus Buy?” – a wonderful documentary film about the rampant Commercialization of Christmas – features the Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping Gospel Choir. Read about the film – http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0939681/plotsummary

While we can’t totally stop shopping – we can Buy Local More and nurture a conscience about who is receiving our shopping dollars.

Original Post

Buy Nothing Day is Friday Nov 25 – and now – thanks to ramped-up greed – Thanksgiving Night too.

Buy Nothing Day has been urging consumers world-wide not to take part in the culturally iconic and greed-slimed Black Friday Shopping Splurge for more than 20 years.

This year Wal$Mart moved the goalposts and announced it will begin the Shopping Frenzy at 10 on Thanksgiving night – one of the two usually guaranteed workers’ holidays in our country – along with Christmas.

If you have to buy something on Friday … please buy it from a store owned by someone who lives in your town – your money stays where you live, helps your neighbors and grows your local economy.

For folks living in Central Texas, I suggest shopping at Wheatsville Food Co-op (voted once again the Best Neighborhood Grocery in the annual Austin Chronicle poll) – BookPeople bookstore – across the street, Waterloo Records – and Vulcan Video.

Simply put – Please Stay Away from the Malls and Big-Box Stores on Black Friday.
